Are you considering applying to study on an undergraduate or master’s degree program at The American University of Rome, but are not a mother-tongue English speaker?
Have you discovered that you need further English language preparation in order to be accepted onto our program and to perform successfully at AUR?
Then the Academic English Program has been specially designed to meet your needs.
In the Program, you will learn to use appropriate and correct English in order to develop the range of academic skills required for study at an English-speaking university, including:
- speaking clearly and contributing your views and ideas in seminars and group discussions
- listening attentively and using essential note-taking strategies in lectures
- reading academic texts with in-depth understanding and summarizing of key points
- presenting in class, using slideshow software as a communication aid
- writing assignments and essays drawing on supporting evidence from sources.
You will be encouraged to develop a critical and analytical approach to both your reading of academic and specialized material, and writing of academic genres. If you are an undergraduate candidate, you will simultaneously have the opportunity to apply what you learn to various ‘real-life’ contexts in the AUR First Year Program (e.g. attending lectures), and even take a credit-carrying course, such as Sketching or Photography. This way you immediately become an active member of the AUR community, having the opportunity to use the AUR library, go on organized excursions, take part in events, and socialize and interact with other AUR students.
The Academic English Program is intensive. Classes meet during the 16 week Fall or Spring semesters from Monday to Thursday, 15.40 to 19.20, to encourage maximum progress in a relatively short period of time. Although the daily schedule is busy, class activities are highly varied and carefully paced. Past student testimonials have shown that this helps ensure lessons - and learning - are stimulating and interesting. The course includes visits to cultural events in Rome, such as art/photographic exhibitions and English theatre.
