We don't ask families to simply drop their students off and say goodbye. Instead, we invite them to remain an active, welcomed part of their student’s academic and personal journey, in a way that respects their child’s growing independence while offering the reassurance of continued connection.

Every semester, as new students arrive in Rome to begin their studies, AUR organizes a dedicated Family Orientation Program that runs alongside student orientation. Families are welcomed onto campus, given the opportunity to meet faculty, administrators, and fellow parents, and provided with detailed insights into the academic and social life their students will experience.

Orientation is not a formality - it’s a celebration. From walking tours of historic Rome and delicious Italian cooking classes to on-campus receptions, parents are given the chance to experience firsthand the vibrant international community their students are joining. It’s a chance to build connections not only with AUR staff and faculty but also with other families who are beginning a similar adventure.

An Open-Door Philosophy

At AUR, our open-door philosophy doesn't end after orientation week. Families are encouraged to stay connected throughout their student's time at the university. Whether visiting Rome for a holiday, a long weekend, or just passing through, parents are warmly invited to return to campus, attend events, and engage with the community. Our staff are always ready to answer questions, provide updates, or simply share in a coffee and conversation about how their student is growing and thriving.

We understand that a student’s growth into independence is essential. But we also believe that maintaining strong ties with family can be a cornerstone of success during the college years. At AUR, students are encouraged to forge their own paths, while families are reassured that they are never left out of the picture.

In a world where some institutions emphasize letting go, AUR values the balance of letting grow. We create an environment where students can soar - and where families are respected, involved, and appreciated every step of the way.

At The American University of Rome, we don’t just enroll students. We welcome families into a community that extends across continents, generations, and experiences - because from here, you will be part of something that feels like home - even when home may be half a world away.
