AH 260 – THE ‘GRAND TOUR’: THE LURE OF NAPLES IN THE 18TH CENTURY

The course will focus on the history of the forming of important collections of ancient, Renaissance, and Baroque art, in particular the Archeological Museum of Naples and the Capodimonte Museum, and the impact of the discovery of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Special attention will be given to the reactions of the visitors when confronted with the nude figure in Renaissance and ancient art and the ancient erotic art found at Pompeii and Herculaneum.
