Biography

Marzia Mauriello’s research areas cover gender, health and body issues, and food cultures. She has published, nationally and internationally, on topics related to gender and sexuality, gender variance, and on the intersection between food and gender in urban contexts. For more than a decade she has been carrying out fieldwork activities mainly in Naples. She has worked on food cultures in Naples in relation to gender, space, and migration. Her book on the topic is forthcoming.  She is currently co-editing the forthcoming special issue “Food and Gender: contemporary perspectives, studies, and research" for the journal Anthropology of Food. 

Marzia has participated in many national and international conferences and workshops and held seminars and lectures in universities in Italy and abroad.   She is the Scientific Secretary of the Study Center on Food and Nutrition of the Università di Napoli L’Orientale and teaches Medical Anthropology at the Università Magna Græcia of  Catanzaro (Italy).  She is a member of the European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA), and other anthropological associations (Italian Society of Cultural Anthropology and of Medical Anthropology).  

She has recently published An Anthropology of Gender Variance and Trans Experience in Naples. Beauty in Transit (Palgrave Macmillan, Oct. 2021).
