In light of heightened political tensions and with an unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of our university community, The American University of Rome has conducted a comprehensive review of its safety and security protocols.

Effective October 18, 2023, heightened security measures will be in place at AUR's campus entrance, along with strengthened internal security protocols. The AUR community has been informed of these changes and has actively fed back their approval and understanding of the reasons for putting these protocols in place.

While US and Italian authorities do not indicate any immediate increase in threats or concerns in Rome/Italy, we strongly encourage all community members to exercise heightened awareness, particularly in public and crowded locations.

There are simple precautions all individuals should always take:

  • If you are traveling, please ensure that before your trip, you establish points of contact for the university and your family to contact in an emergency.

  • Before you travel, check the US State Department’s Travel Advisory and Alerts for your destination(s) at travel.state.gov/destination. Be sure to read further country-specific details on the same page that could affect your travel, such as entry/exit requirements, local laws and customs, health conditions, transportation, and other relevant topics.

  • Avoid traveling alone, especially after dark. Be conscious of your surroundings and avoid areas you believe may put your personal safety at risk.

  • Avoid civil disturbances and obey local laws. If you come upon a demonstration or rally, be careful not to be unintentionally pulled into a situation that may put you at risk.

The university will continue to review its safety and security measures in line with advice from the US and Italian authorities.
