Federal Student Loan Program for Graduate Students

The American University of Rome participates in US Title IV Direct Lending to cover the estimated cost of attendance for U.S. citizens and permanent residents. Graduate students are eligible for Direct Unsubsidized and PLUS loans through this program. Our financial aid department is dedicated to counseling students through the entire process, from the application stage through the disbursement and management of these loans.


Merit-Based AUR Scholarships

For new incoming graduate students, there is one application for all of the below merit-based scholarships at AUR. You can apply for multiple scholarships that are applicable to you, however, please note that you can only be awarded one merit-based scholarship. While these scholarships are not combinable with each other, they can be combined with a financial need scholarship and/or a student training position. Each academic year, a maximum of €7000 or $8000 annually will be awarded to up to three students per scholarship.

The Building Bridges Scholarship   The Global Scholar Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to multilingual individual(s) who have proven themselves to be global communicators. For students who have striven to understand and bridge multiple cultures through the use of language.   AUR’s Global Scholar scholarship has been designed to reward the best of the best. If you’re an applicant with a GPA of over 3.5, you are encouraged to apply for this award.

H. Jackson Brown Dreamers’ Scholarship   The Italian Pioneer Scholarship
“Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” So wrote H. Jackson Brown in 1990 – and he could have been describing any one of our students. The Dreamer’s Scholarship is open to any student who aspires to leave their comfort zone and break the mold.   This scholarship is awarded to Italian citizens and/or individuals of direct Italian heritage and is one of the small ways that AUR contributes towards the support and development of Italian communities worldwide as a thank you to our amazing host nation.

The World Citizen Scholarship
Welcome home, traveler! The AUR World Citizen Scholarship is awarded to individuals who have previously studied with AUR as Visiting Students and/or have studied with an institutional partner of American Universities Abroad.

Financial Need Scholarships

Financial Need Scholarship
The Financial Need Scholarship is available to new incoming graduate students at AUR and is only applicable to the first year of study in line with University tuition charges. Students must remain in good academic standing to maintain the scholarship for a second semester. All scholarships are only applicable during the fall and spring semesters.
Students must be accepted and enroll full-time in order to be considered for this scholarship. Priority Deadlines: Fall semester: April 1st; Spring semester: November 1st

Affiliation Scholarships

Sons and Daughters of Italy Scholarship   Antonio & Felicia Marinelli Scholarship
The Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America offers a scholarship together with The American University of Rome to American students with Italian heritage. The scholarship is $20,000 over four years (the recipient will receive $5,000 each academic year) and is awarded based on merit. The OSDIA Committee selects the recipient based on academic merit (including test scores, transcripts, and a letter of recommendation), the essay response, and community service/volunteerism. Both new and returning AUR students are eligible to apply. Deadline: February 28th   The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) offers one merit scholarship per year to an AUR graduate or undergraduate student of Italian heritage. The NIAF committee requires a minimum 3.5 GPA or higher, an online application, two letters of recommendation, and an essay response. Award amounts vary. Deadline: March 1st

The Anthropocene Scholarship
The Anthropocene Scholarship, generously funded by an anonymous donor, will carry a value of EUR 2,500 that will be deducted from the tuition fees of a graduate student in the Food Studies program. The Scholarship will be awarded to a student based on need/merit, with preference given to European students. If there is no eligible European student, it can be awarded to any eligible student in the program.

AmeriCorps & PeaceCorps Scholarships

AmeriCorps Scholarship   Coverdell Matching Scholarship
The American University of Rome offers up to 5 graduate scholarships of €1,500/$2,000 off the overall Master's program tuition to be awarded in the first academic year to AmeriCorps students. This scholarship is not combinable with the AUR Coverdell Matching Scholarship. AmeriCorp benefits may be used for AUR's M.A. programs.   All Returned Peace Corps Volunteers admitted to AUR’s master’s degree programs receive a guaranteed partial scholarship. As a U.S. accredited institution based in Italy, AUR is not eligible to participate in the Paul D. Coverdell Fellows Program. However, recognizing the depth of experience RPCVs bring to our programs, we acknowledge their contribution and service through our own Coverdell Matching Scholarship. There is no separate scholarship application, but the submission of a DOS (Description of Service) will be required in order to qualify. This scholarship is not combinable with the AUR Americorps Scholarship.

AUR degree holders qualify for a 10% alumni tuition discount.   U.S. Veterans benefits may be used for AUR's M.A. programs.

Student Training Program

The American University of Rome offers a limited number of student training positions to full-time AUR degree-seeking students. Students who participate in this program receive training in various areas of the University in exchange for partial remission of tuition or reimbursement if tuition has already been paid in full.

Training hours can range between 10-20 hours a week and are for the academic year although graduate students are recommended to consider a maximum of 10 hours per week due to rigorous coursework.

Returning students who wish to apply or reapply for a student training position must fill out the application below and submit by the due date in order to be considered for a position. 

Student training requirements: All awards are limited to students enrolled full-time with a 2.7 cumulative GPA or above, meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP), and not defaulted on education loans.
