Compositional Interpretation of a Visual Artifact

This is a short and very basic guide to Compositional Interpretation. It is meant to be introductory only and to require the aid of an instructor, at least at first viewing. Its purpose is to encourge an initial critical analysis of pictures and paintings that focuses on component elements separately and in sequence. This is a preliminary step to the holistic discussion and understanding of visual art that must follow. The whole is always more than just the sum of its parts, but understanding how those parts are constructed to act together on the viewer's imagination is a necessary step toward proper appreciation.

Semiology for Compositional Interpretation of a Visual Artifact

This is a short and very basic guide to the use of signs and symbols in visual artifacts. It is meant to be introductory only and to require the aid of an instructor, at least at first viewing. Its purpose is to encourge the viewer to pay attention to how visual elements function as signs that are part of a larger system of signification (meaning) thanks to which the work of art allows the artist and the viewer to communicate successfully, albeit imperfectly, across vast expanses of time and space.
