On November 15, The American University of Rome (AUR) Italian Studies Program proudly hosted Anthony Giacchino, Oscar® and Emmy® award-winning filmmaker, for a special evening dedicated to the art of documentary storytelling. The event showcased Giacchino’s remarkable career and deep passion for uncovering untold stories through film.

Best known for his 2021 Academy Award-winning short documentary Colette, Giacchino's work delves into moments of profound human experience and history. During the evening, Giacchino treated the student audience to an exclusive journey through his filmmaking career, from highlighting his collaboration with Marvel Studios on Director by Night to exploring the emotional resilience of a French Resistance fighter in Colette.

A highlight of the event was Giacchino’s presentation of his latest documentary project, My Name is Petrosino, which investigates the life of Detective Joe Petrosino, a pioneering Italian immigrant to the U.S. who was the only NYPD officer killed overseas in the line of duty. Through a carefully curated slideshow of archival documents from the early 1900s, Giacchino explored the historical and cultural significance of Petrosino's unsolved 1909 murder, shedding light on the early battle against organized crime and the immigrant experience in America.

Giacchino’s films have garnered critical acclaim for blending personal narratives with broader historical contexts, creating works that are profoundly moving and intellectually engaging. His storytelling, grounded in meticulous research and a commitment to truth, captivates audiences worldwide.

The American University of Rome thanks Mr. Giacchino for sharing his extraordinary passion and knowledge with AUR's students.
