Italian healthcare has been consistently ranked as number 2 in the world for several years (see http://gazettereview.com/2016/04/countries-with-the-best-health-care/).
The AUR Doctor
In order to better meet student health needs, Student Life has arranged to have a doctor on campus 3-4 days a week for primary care at no charge to students. Office hours are subject to change and are posted on the Student Life bulletin board.
For specialist visits, the Office of Student Life can assist students with hospital or physician appointments. There are several excellent public hospitals in the immediate campus area and an international private hospital within easy walking distance of the campus.
Italian law requires all non-European visiting students to obtain a mandatory state emergency health coverage for the duration of their study in Italy. The University facilitates this process by arranging the purchase of the insurance and the compilation of the applicable documents for the authorities. This insurance coverage gives the student complete access to emergency public medical care. The individual study abroad programs often require additional medical coverage, inclusive of emergency medical evacuation.
The American University of Rome provides its students with free, confidential psychological services. A certified counselor gives routine, non-medical counseling to students by appointment. Detailed information on this service can be found in the Student Handbook and on appropriate bulletin boards on campus.
A psychiatrist is also available by appointment and free of charge to students for prescribing and monitoring medications.
